Let me tell you a little bit of my story. I wrote my first song in high school. When friend introduced me to a piece of software that allowed me to record and play back 8 tracks of audio, I was hooked. I had spent a lot of time recording myself on cassette tape recorders, but this was next-level. I grabbed a set of headphones and rummaged through a drawer to find a cheap, plastic microphone (pictured here).

I plugged them in and got lost in the world of multi-track recording. I recorded an 8-song album, printed a bunch of CDs, and sold them around town for $10 apiece.

I was thrilled with the creative process, but I had no clue how to make my music sound professional.

All I wanted was to be able to create incredible-sounding music for the rest of my life.

At the time, the only option was to head off to college and study music production, so that's what I did.

My college degree was a huge step for my musical journey, but it was only the beginning. Once I acquired the technical skills to become an audio engineer (how to run a recording session, how to use recording software), that's when I began the slow, painful, trial-and-error process of learning how to be a music producer. Sadly, my college only taught me the technical skills. I had to learn the creative skills on my own. But slowly over time, song after song, album after album, I honed those skills to the point where today I can produce a great-sounding piece of music in just a few hours if I want to. It feels like having a super power!

The big ah-ha moment for me, the thing that changed everything, was when I discovered a core philosophy that guides everything I do in the studio. That guiding philosophy is this: 

Get it right at the source. (GIRATS for short.)

In a world filled with amazing tools that can do seemingly anything, there's still no way to make a bad recording sound good. You can’t “fix it in the mix.” There's no magic plugin that takes a boring production and makes it exciting. There's no amount of secret ninja mixing skills that will take crappy sounding tracks and make them sound amazing.
